How often should you clean and service a kitchen chimney?

· 4 min read

Short answer

With daily Indian cooking, wash the baffle filters every 2 to 3 weeks, or once a month if you rarely fry, and empty the oil collector of an auto-clean model whenever it fills. Book a technician's deep clean of the blower, motor and duct once a year.

Tadka, frying and long simmering put a lot of oil into the air, and a chimney only pulls it out while the filters and blower are clear. Most of the upkeep is a quick wash at home. The rest is one visit from a technician each year.

Filters: the part you clean yourself

How often depends on how much you fry. Soak the filters in hot water with dish soap or a spoon of baking soda, scrub, rinse and let them dry fully before refitting.

  • Daily cooking with tadka or frying: every 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Lighter cooking, mostly boiled or steamed food: once a month.
  • Mesh filters clog faster than baffle filters, so wash them at the short end of that range.
  • Carbon filters in ductless models can't be washed. Replace them on the schedule in the manual.

Auto-clean still needs you

The auto-clean button heats the blower so grease runs off into an oil collector cup. That saves scrubbing the motor, but you still empty the cup and wash the filters. Check the cup weekly until you know how fast it fills.

The yearly deep service

Once a year a technician should open the chimney, degrease the blower and motor, check the duct for oil and leaks, and test the suction. Brands such as Faber and Kaff recommend this on top of cleaning at home.

Signs it needs attention now

  • Smoke and smells hang in the kitchen even on the highest speed.
  • Oil drips from the filters or the hood.
  • The motor is louder than it used to be, or rattles.
  • A sticky layer of grease builds up on cabinets near the stove.

Grease that collects in the duct can catch fire, and the yearly service is when it gets cleared out.

Common questions

How often should I clean my kitchen chimney filter?

Every 2 to 3 weeks with daily Indian cooking that involves tadka or frying, and once a month with lighter use. Mesh filters clog faster than baffle filters. Soak them in hot soapy water, scrub, rinse and let them dry fully before putting them back.

Does an auto-clean chimney need cleaning?

Yes. Auto-clean moves grease from the blower into an oil cup that you empty by hand, and it does nothing for the filters, which still need washing every few weeks. It doesn't replace the yearly visit from a technician either.

When should a kitchen chimney be serviced by a technician?

Once a year, or sooner if the suction drops, the motor gets noisy or oil drips from the hood. The technician cleans the blower and motor, checks the duct for grease and leaks, and tests the suction.
